Los Angeles based artist Brian Poor has worked as a conceptual illustrator and animatronics designer for the film and television industry for over a decade. He has designed and built robots, monsters, and props for feature films such as Mimic, Species II, Virus, and A.I. as well as animatronic creatures for Disney Imagineering. During this time he honed his skills as an artist and craftsman while continuing to develop his vision of blending art and technology.
Brian grew up among the rugged coastlines and redwood forests of northern California where he spent many a rainy afternoon tinkering and creating within the workshops of his father and grandfather. He has an associate of science degree in electronics technology and a bachelor’s degree in studio arts from Humboldt State University.
Title: Incredible Hulk Kinetic Suit
Comments: This suit was designed to allow a 6’ tall performer to move a 9’ tall monster suit in an organic and natural manner. The suit consists of a layer of foam latex skin over a layer of free-floating muscle packages which are in turn supported upon a mechanical skeleton with a system of bungee “muscles” to provide bounce. Ultimately this suit was never used.
Title: Snakes On A Plane Puppet Head
Comments: This is a mechanized snake puppet head made for Snakes On A Plane. The jaws open and close and the fangs extend.
Title: Teminator Insert Hand
Comments: This was made for a television series pilot featuring the Terminator. It appears in the opening sequence where it reaches in frame to grab someone by the throat. The fingers are fully articulated and independently cable controlled.
Title: Di Giorno Pinocchio Head
Comments: This is an animatronic head for a commercial for a well known brand of frozen pizza. Ironically it ended up looking like live-action stop motion.
Title: Killer Pad Demon Wings And Tail
Comments: Wings and a tail were made for the protagonist of Robert Englund’s (aka Freddy Krueger) horror comedy Killer Pad.
Title: Mimic Nymph
Comments: This is the baby version of Guillermo Del Toro’s Mimic. Eighteen separate servo driven functions were crammed into a 9” bug.
Title: Species 2 Monster Suit
Comments: I was involved in the making of this monster suit for Species 2. The highlight of this job was meeting H.R. Giger.
Title: Strange Wilderness Turkey
Comments: The concept behind this is the assault of someone by an enraged turkey while taking a leak in the woods. This results in him running around with a wing-flapping turkey attached to his groin. Note the strategic placement of the protective cup.
Title: Burrowers Puppet
Comments: Animatronic puppet built for the burrowers movie. It included mechanized neck and head movements, jaw articulation, and little twitchy vestigal arms.
Title: Virus Droids
Comments: This is a free-walking mechanism based upon a spider. It made its appearance in the movie Virus in two different versions; the gear droid and the spider droid.
